Google Analytics is a fantastic tool for analysing traffic on your website. Setup correctly, it will provide you an enormous amount of information about who is coming to your site, what they're looking for, and how they're getting there, plus much more.

This is fundamentally different from how most website statistical tools works, which are installed on the same server as your website. These tools look at your website from the "inside" and track traffic in terms of hits to the server. In most cases this does not provide a realistic picture of human user activity.
Google Analytics looks at your website from the "outside" and attempts to closely approximate the experience of a human user which is a more realistic reflection of user activity. Google Analytics also allows you to add IP addresses to a filter in your analytics account so that your numbers are not skewed by your own traffic on the website.
